Transfiguration. Change. Visible change. Luke tells the story of Jesus on the mountain top and the appearance of Moses and Elijah. Jesus led Peter, James, and John to the mountain top. The mountain top offered a bit of respite from the celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles, away from the crowds which by this time in Jesus’s ministry were increasingly large and demanding. In the seclusion of this mountain, Moses, the Old Testament law giver, and Elijah, the Old Testament prophet, appear. Out of nowhere. Out of a mist, perhaps. The three disciples recognize the two elders and see Jesus talking with them. Then, the two disappear. Into a mist. Into nowhere. So elated were the disciples that they wanted to build monuments. They want to stay forever. But the next day, Jesus, Peter, James, and John descended the mountain and were greeted by an insistent father, seeking healing for his possessed son. The respite for Jesus was over. Jesus rebuked the demon, healed the young man, and returned him to his father. There are times when I want to remain after a Bible study or a worship service. They are havens from the world and its wars, its cruelty, and its tedium. But just as with the three disciples, we have to tell those at the foot of the mountain about what we’ve experienced so that they will believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah.

Pray

God of commission, You have revealed that there is more to being redeemed than just singing praises to You. You have shown that being a believer requires action that will result in others coming to have knowledge of You and becoming believers, also. Thank You for the privilege of sharing the message of Your love and redemption. Amen.

Go with God!
