Prepare yourself to discern what is and what is not of God today. Still yourself so you can hear how God is calling you.

Reflect

I’ve heard ministers talk about how difficult it can be to return to their home church as pastor. Mrs. Johnson remembers when you wouldn’t be quiet and participate in Sunday school class. Mr. Peeler remembers the mischief you got into when he was your camp counselor. It can be difficult for people to set aside those images and memories to accept a person as a spiritual leader.

Even though Jesus was not a native of Jerusalem, he was not accepted by the religious leaders. He wasn’t one of them (pharisees or Sadducees), so they automatically dismissed his words and works. Even with crowds of people following Jesus, the religious leaders wanted him gone. His popularity with the masses was a threat to their power.

When have you had the opportunity to stand up for who or what you thought was right even if doing so went against popular opinion or those in leadership roles? What gave you the courage to take this stance? As you reflect on those times, do you still feel your actions were right?

Pray

God, help us to discern between those messengers sent from you and those who are of the world. Let us not be afraid to stand for your messengers. Amen.
