Job is considered by some scholars to be the first book written, recorded, and recounted in the Bible. A lot of times if you buy or have read a chronological Bible, Job comes first. 

Job really addresses the problem of evil and why good things happen to bad people.  Satan, not necessarily the Devil, but a divine being identified as the Adversary where we get the word Satan. The adversary has been scanning all creation and God asks him if he has considered His servant Job and Satan the adversary claims Job is only faithful to God because God has protected him and given him a good life.  So God gives Satan power over Job to take his wealth, his family, and even his health but he is not allowed to kill Job though.  His friends who God is dealing with in this passage. They have the assumption as did many Israelites even in the 1^st century (^NRS  John 9:1 As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. ² His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” ³ Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him.)  that Job must have sinned to have caused the calamity of losing his family, being stricken with sickness, and His friends rather than support him accuse him because God would not let calamity befall someone unless they sinned.   

The point of this passage is to warn us not to be so quick to judge someone’s calamity on their failings as a person. Rather we are to try to seek to restore and love people. Here Job’s “friends” start off trying to figure out his sin to restore him, but then they grow weary and they scrutinize and condemn him.  So God has them to make restitution to Job and it is not cheap. However, when we break friendships and say hurtful words it is a steep cost and a long path back to friendship even when we admit we were wrong.  I have not seen as many hurtful words as I have seen the debates between the maskers and the non-maskers in 2020 and the Vaxxers and the anti-vaxxers in 2021. I have never seen such hateful words people wishing death on the anti-vaxxers and wishing ill will to those being vaccinated. I am hoping by the time this is published the hate dies down.   We are called to love one another.  We may not agree with everything someone does.  Those who are getting vaccinated are those who want to be protected from COVID 19 and that should be respected.  Those who are not might for health reasons or concerns and that needs to be respected.  We should have a healthy love and respect for one another and not allow such things to divide the body.
