The people were fighting over leadership. Some wanted King Saul and some wanted David to be King. Battles raged until finally David won the battle and was designated the new King of Israel. He tried to unite the land and succeeded to some extent. David showed forgiveness for his enemies and trusted in the Lord to tell him what to do. Scholars call this the golden era of Israel = the days when the people looked to David and David looked to the Lord and followed God’s instructions to forgive. David remembered his days as a shepherd boy who killed the giant Goliath with small stones and a sling, who wrote songs of praise to God and played them on his lyre in the fields and then in the court of King Saul. David thought of his days fighting Saul and sometimes hiding from Saul and his troops. Now David was King of Israel and it was time to bring the people together so that they could show others how God’s people could live and care for each other.

David trusted in the Lord to bring justice to the land. David trusted in the love of God – ponder that.  As long as David relied on the Lord’s guidance and remained a man after God’s own heart, things went well for him and the country. May we learn and share the lessons of David’s life.

Pray

Lord, be our guide we pray. As we begin a weekend that in the United States we celebrate as the 4th of July, the beginning of the United States of America, may we remember that You can be our guide. As we read stories of disasters around the globe, conflict, sickness, floods and fires, may we trust in Your trustworthy steadfast love and know that You are our sure defense. Thank you Lord that You can overcome any troubles of this world and bring peace to every heart if we will only allow it to happen. Keep the world safe in Your loving care. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Go with God!
