Tennessee-Georgia Presbytery – Spring 2024

The Tennessee Georgia Presbytery met at the Sumach Cumberland Presbyterian Church Saturday March 9, 2024 10:00 CST.  We had 55+ attending. 

We thank the Sumach Congregation and Pastor for the wonderful meal and all their efforts in hosting this meeting.

We elected Rev. Elder Tim McDonald as Moderator (First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga and Rev. Jennifer Newell (Louisa Woosley initiative) as vice Moderator.  We had a wonderful worship service, with Rev. Mitch Boulton (Moderator of the 192nd General Assembly) bringing the message.  Holy Communion was served by Host Pastor Rev. Tom Clark of the Sumach Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

There were several denominational representatives: Rev. Dr. Courtney Krueger (Pastoral Development Ministry Team), Rev. Jennifer Newell (Louisa Woosley Preaching Initiative), Rev. Mitch Boulton (ENGAGE AND Denominational Vision), John Pyon (Youth Events), Rev. Cliff Hudson (OUO and General Meeting of Synod of the South East on May 4th at the Scottsboro Cumberland Presbyterian Church).  

We received Josiah Liljekvist (First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Cleveland) as a Candidate for the Ministry.  After completion of the required education, we recognized the ordinations of Rev. Adam Whitescarver presently serving the Red Bank Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Rev. Cary Gephart presently serving the New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  We created installation commissions for each. We recognized the efforts of GJH Ministries (New Church Development). We prayerfully support them as they prepare members of the congregation to attend Elder Training and complete the steps to be constituted as a church.

 One of our Commissioners is unable to attend 193rd General Assembly in Evansville Indiana from June 16-21, we elected Elder James Condra of the New Hope congregation to serve in his place.

 Our Closing Devotion was given by Candidate for Ministry Josiah Liljekvist.

Matthew H. Gore is a historian and journalist with a deep commitment to preserving and interpreting the past. He holds a BA in History, a BA in Journalism, and an MA in History, all from Western Kentucky University, which honored him with their prestigious James H. Poteet Award. He also pursued doctoral studies at the University of Kentucky. Gore has contributed extensively to both academic and popular publications, specializing in religious history, particularly within the Cumberland Presbyterian tradition. He is best known for his book The History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Kentucky to 1988 (2000), and his work has also ranged widely, covering subjects as diverse as The Origin of Marvelman (a British superhero of the 1950s and 1960s), the relative scarcity of East German philatelics, and the biography of British pulp artist Denis McLoughlin. Gore has spent much of his career in service to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he holds key roles in communications, historical preservation, and publishing. Since 2018, he has served as editor of the Cumberland Presbyterian magazine for the Ministry Council of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church A past president of the Society of Tennessee Archivists, Gore is widely recognized for his leadership in archival work and his passion for sharing the narratives of faith communities with broader audiences.
