Tennessee-Georgia Presbytery – Fall 2023

Tennessee-Georgia Presbytery, October 7, 2023, Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

We had an in-person assembly:  18 Pastors, 2 Provisional, 19 Elder Delegates, 4 Candidates, 2 Licentiates, with many guests and host church members in attendance.

We elected Rev. Bruce Potter as Moderator and Elder Tim McDonald as vice Moderator.

We had a wonderful worship service, with Licentiate Cary Gephart bringing the message “A Purified People” – offering is being sent to the Haiti missions effort. Our Closing Devotion was given by Candidate for Ministry Cathy Hill “Trusting and Obedience to God”

Rev. Dr. Courtney Krueger presented a Challenge Coin to Rev. Dr. Phil Sumrall.  Rev. Cliff Hudson reminded the presbytery that the Synod of the South Easts meeting in 2024 is a general synod.

Tennessee Georgia Presbytery added Rev. Matthew Cox to the Roll.  He is still a minister in the CPCA in the Hiawassee Presbytery, and will have, in effect, dual membership.  We Also Received Rev. Dr. Kevin Barnes as a Licentiate for Ministry. He comes to us from the United Methodist Church and is being installed at the Bartow Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  We received Caroline Quinn as a Candidate for Ministry.

We voted on the amendments to the Constitution with a simple majority vote of (20 voting Yes and 19 voting No)

Matthew H. Gore is a historian and journalist with a deep commitment to preserving and interpreting the past. He holds a BA in History, a BA in Journalism, and an MA in History, all from Western Kentucky University, which honored him with their prestigious James H. Poteet Award. He also pursued doctoral studies at the University of Kentucky. Gore has contributed extensively to both academic and popular publications, specializing in religious history, particularly within the Cumberland Presbyterian tradition. He is best known for his book The History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Kentucky to 1988 (2000), and his work has also ranged widely, covering subjects as diverse as The Origin of Marvelman (a British superhero of the 1950s and 1960s), the relative scarcity of East German philatelics, and the biography of British pulp artist Denis McLoughlin. Gore has spent much of his career in service to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he holds key roles in communications, historical preservation, and publishing. Since 2018, he has served as editor of the Cumberland Presbyterian magazine for the Ministry Council of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church A past president of the Society of Tennessee Archivists, Gore is widely recognized for his leadership in archival work and his passion for sharing the narratives of faith communities with broader audiences.
