Campaigns and Battles of the Sixteenth Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers: In the War Between the States, with Incidental Sketches of the Part Performed by Other Tennessee Troops in the Same War 1861-1865

A Civil War History Written by One Who Was There

Originally published by the Cumberland Presbyterian Publishing House in Nashville in 1885, after being serialized in the Cumberland Presbyterian newspaper, Thomas A. Head’s Campaigns and Battles of the Sixteenth Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers is more than a regimental history. It is the work of a Confederate veteran recording the experiences of his comrades while their memories of the war were still very much alive.

Head recounts the campaigns, battles, hardships and personalities of the Sixteenth Tennessee while placing the regiment within the broader story of Tennessee troops during the Civil War. Written only 20 years after the conflict ended, his account preserves details, recollections and perspectives that might otherwise have disappeared with the generation that experienced them.

For genealogists, students of Tennessee history and Civil War researchers, Head’s work remains an important nineteenth-century source—and a fascinating example of how veterans themselves remembered and interpreted the war.
Originally issued in 1885, this edition reproduces Head’s text without alteration. Readers should keep in mind that its terminology, attitudes and interpretation of the Civil War reflect the period and circumstances in which the author wrote.
A firsthand Tennessee account of the Civil War, preserved for a new generation of readers.
