Summary of Minutes for Nashville Presbytery for Spring 2024

Nashville Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church met in its regular Spring Meeting at 9:00 AM, April 27, 2024, with the Waverly and Mariah Cumberland Presbyterian Churches. The Presbytery was called to order by Rev. Stewart Salyer, Moderator. A quorum was declared present and the Constituting Prayer was led by Rev. Taylor Young. The morning Devotional was brought by candidate Johnathan Murphy from Mt. Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Rev. Jimmy Byrd was elected Moderator of Nashville Presbytery. Rev. Steve Jones was elected Vice-Moderator of Nashville Presbytery. The Reverends Carol Miller, Steve Parrish, Malcolm Patton, Rob Truitt, and Chaplain David W. Acuff requested to be Honorably Retired which was approved. The Committee on Theology and Social Concerns recommended that a proposed Memorial concerning movement of elders, deacons and ministers from the CPC to the CPCA be approved to be sent to the 193rd General Assembly (which has been done). Rev. Taylor Kibler was approved to be installed as Pastor of the Mt. Sharon CP. Church and his installation commission elected.

After a time of testimony and examination, Tamara Parrish-Patsko was asked the appropriate questions from the Confession of Faith which she answered affirmatively. She was approved as a candidate by Nashville Presbytery and was placed under the care of the Committee for Preparation for Ministry. The Heritage Committee reported that it and the Historical Foundation had worked together to have the fence replaced around the log house at the Birthplace Shrine. Rev. Emrie Rogers prayed the Closing Prayer and the meeting was adjourned. Nashville Presbytery Fall Meeting will be with the Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

Matthew H. Gore is a historian and journalist with a deep commitment to preserving and interpreting the past. He holds a BA in History, a BA in Journalism, and an MA in History, all from Western Kentucky University, which honored him with their prestigious James H. Poteet Award. He also pursued doctoral studies at the University of Kentucky. Gore has contributed extensively to both academic and popular publications, specializing in religious history, particularly within the Cumberland Presbyterian tradition. He is best known for his book The History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Kentucky to 1988 (2000), and his work has also ranged widely, covering subjects as diverse as The Origin of Marvelman (a British superhero of the 1950s and 1960s), the relative scarcity of East German philatelics, and the biography of British pulp artist Denis McLoughlin. Gore has spent much of his career in service to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he holds key roles in communications, historical preservation, and publishing. Since 2018, he has served as editor of the Cumberland Presbyterian magazine for the Ministry Council of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church A past president of the Society of Tennessee Archivists, Gore is widely recognized for his leadership in archival work and his passion for sharing the narratives of faith communities with broader audiences.
