Grace Presbytery – Spring Meeting 2025

March 14, 2025, Grace Presbytery, New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, Alabama.

1) On motion, approved changing Recommendation 2 of Report of the Committee on Pastoral Care to say “Grace Presbytery approve and promote “The Gathering at the Bell”.

Rev. Acton gave more information on “The Gathering at the Bell”. He noted that the following speakers will be there: On Monday evening, Rev. Ron McMillan; on Tuesday morning, Rev. Mitch Bolton and Rev. Dr. Lynn Thomas; on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Peter Jeffrey and open forum for discussion. Rev. Acton will be meeting with Scott Dawson this week and Scott may speak on Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday’s final discussion will be “Where do we go from here?”.

2) Letter emailed from Hopewell CP Church advising that Supply Pastor Scott Edwards has resigned his position at Hopewell Church. On motion dissolved the relationship between Supply Pastor Scott Edwards and Hopewell Church.

3) Letter from New Hope Church advising that Rev. Sherrlyn Frost has resigned her position as Associate Minister of New Hope Church and requesting that the relationship between Rev. Frost and New Hope Church be dissolved. On motion dissolved relationship between Rev. Sherrlyn Frost and New Hope Church.

4) Letter received from Harmony Church of Helena advising that Harmony Church and Brother Scott Edwards have entered in an agreement to have him serve as Lay Pastor. On motion, referred to Board of Missions

5) Letter received from Rev. Daniel Barkley advising that the Commission to install Rev. Lonnie Wadsworth as Pastor of Glencoe church has completed its work and requested that the Commission be dissolved. On motion, the Commission is dissolved.

6) Rev. Lynn Thomas introduced the enclosed “Memorial Of Grace Presbytery Asking General Assembly To Interpret Parliamentarians As Having The Authority To Be A Surrogate Moderator”. On motion, Presbytery approved sending the Memorial to General Assembly. (copy attached)

7) A nomination was received from the floor to nominate Rev. Daniel Barkley as Moderator of General Assembly. Second was received. A motion to close nominations was received. On motion approved to nominate Rev. Daniel Barkley as Moderator of General Assembly.

8) The next meeting of Grace Presbytery will be held at New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Birmingham on October 17, 2025 at 10:00 AM.

Matthew H. Gore is a historian and journalist with a deep commitment to preserving and interpreting the past. He holds a BA in History, a BA in Journalism, and an MA in History, all from Western Kentucky University, which honored him with their prestigious James H. Poteet Award. He also pursued doctoral studies at the University of Kentucky. Gore has contributed extensively to both academic and popular publications, specializing in religious history, particularly within the Cumberland Presbyterian tradition. He is best known for his book The History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Kentucky to 1988 (2000), and his work has also ranged widely, covering subjects as diverse as The Origin of Marvelman (a British superhero of the 1950s and 1960s), the relative scarcity of East German philatelics, and the biography of British pulp artist Denis McLoughlin. Gore has spent much of his career in service to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he holds key roles in communications, historical preservation, and publishing. Since 2018, he has served as editor of the Cumberland Presbyterian magazine for the Ministry Council of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church A past president of the Society of Tennessee Archivists, Gore is widely recognized for his leadership in archival work and his passion for sharing the narratives of faith communities with broader audiences.
