The Honorable George T. Craig, 73, of Athens, Alabama, died December 4, 2025. Born March 10, 1952, in Yokohama, Japan, George came to the United States with his family at age six. After living for a time in California, they settled in Limestone County, Alabama, in 1964—a community he would serve with distinction. An attorney, George spent a combined eighteen years on the bench as a district judge and then as a circuit judge. He made Alabama judicial history as the only elected Asian American judge in the state and the only Independent ever elected as a circuit judge. Following his retirement from the judiciary in 2012, he continued his commitment to public service as director of the Limestone County Department of Corrections, helping individuals transition from incarceration into meaningful work and stable lives. George was an active member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Rogersville (Hope Presbytery), where he served as an elder and taught Sunday school. His daughter, the Rev. Peggy Jean Craig, was ordained in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and now serves Covenant Presbyterian Church in Germantown, Tennessee.
