The Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Marshall, Texas, located at 501 Indian Springs Road, is hosting a unique yard sale, “FreeBay,” on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, from 9 to 11 a.m., where all items are completely free. Organizers emphasize there is no catch—no sales, no donations, no sermons, and no promotional materials. Community members are encouraged to come and take what they need, with a limit of seven items per person to ensure fair distribution for all and to prevent hoarding or resale by dealers. Each family member present can select up to seven items as well.
The event will take place in the air-conditioned gym, rain or shine, and organizers plan to manage any potential crowds with a line system if necessary. The church’s goal is to share with the community, both rich and poor, while giving new life to items that are no longer needed by the givers. They also hope to foster a spirit of fellowship among neighbors and encourage reading by offering books and magazines.
Church deacons plan similar free events three to four times a year, with different items at each. On Oct. 12, available items will include books, magazines, clothing, knick-knacks, and more, all donated by church members. Community members are welcome to contribute similar items in advance by bringing donations to the church office, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On the day of the event, donations will be accepted starting at 8:30 a.m.
After the event, any remaining items will be donated to local charities, including Friends of the Public Library, Hope’s Closet, My Brother’s Keeper, the Soda Lake Clothes Closet, and My Friends House, ensuring the generosity continues beyond the yard sale.
