The Spring quarter of Encounter follows the story of Jesus in the Gospel of John. He raises the dead and confronts the religious and secular authorities. Ultimately, Jesus is led to the cross and grave. It seems the world and its evil systems have won again. Yet, Jesus raises from the grave in victory. The cross, which had been a symbol of humiliation and weakness, is transformed into a symbol of eternal victory. We see that, “God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.”
In the victory of Christ over the grave, the early church is empowered to serve in humility and vulnerability. While these characteristics are viewed as weakness to the world, it is these characteristics that God uses to defeat the evil systems of the world. God’s power is made perfect in weakness.
