Take time to rest in the comfort of the Lord today.
40 When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some asked, “Surely the Messiah does not come from Galilee, does he? 42 Has not the scripture said that the Messiah is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” 43 So there was a division in the crowd because of him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
45 Then the temple police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not arrest him?” 46 The police answered, “Never has anyone spoken like this!” 47 Then the Pharisees replied, “Surely you have not been deceived too, have you? 48 Has any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd, which does not know the law—they are accursed.” 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, asked, 51 “Our law does not judge people without first giving them a hearing to find out what they are doing, does it?” 52 They replied, “Surely you are not also from Galilee, are you? Search and you will see that no prophet is to arise from Galilee.”
Every parent has worries about a child that has the drive to use any means to get what they want and to keep what they have. A parent can find themselves lying in bed at night knowing all the answers and all the outcomes of every decision. For them, the reality of everything is right there and seemingly so easy to see, and yet they know that in the conversations to come, this will not matter. They understand from the battles that have already been waged, that a powerful self-interest can make the truth not even important in making choices. Self-interest can cause someone you love so much to love a lie more than the reality of the truth. There have been many parents that have had one single desire; to save their children from this way of thinking. To save their children from this irrational path, that is not guided by truth, love, compassion, but only their own self-interest. Honestly, it did not matter where Jesus actually came from to those looking for a reason to ignore him. The fact is that when the truth really doesn’t matter, and people really only want to find a reason to protect what they want, there is a crucifixion that awaits. This becomes a cautionary tale for us all. A tale that includes an undeniable desire by God to save His children.
God, send your Spirit upon us so that we can see Jesus as the truth, the way, and the life. Help us to not simply see him as another view of reality that we must work hard to work around. Let us allow Jesus to come off that cross, and to live within us. Let us allow Jesus to teach us. Let us allow Jesus to save us and continue to save us every day. Amen.
Go with God!
