Psalm 119:105-112 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.

I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,
to observe your righteous ordinances.

I am severely afflicted;
give me life, O Lord, according to your word.

Accept my offerings of praise, O Lord,
and teach me your ordinances.

I hold my life in my hand continually,
but I do not forget your law.

The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but I do not stray from your precepts.

Your decrees are my heritage forever;
they are the joy of my heart.

I incline my heart to perform your statutes
forever, to the end.

Reflect

Growing up in my home church, I can remember going to Vacation Bible School. We always started the morning in the sanctuary reciting the pledge to the American flag, the pledge to the Christian flag, and the pledge to the Bible. As I read today’s scripture, the pledge to the Bible came back into my mind. “I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’s holy word. A lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path, its words will I hide in my heart that I might not sin against God.”

The psalmist speaks of the joy of God’s word and the desire to keep God’s word foremost in their life. God has given us God’s word as the guide and handbook for all of life. Are we taking joy in these words like the psalmist? How much time do we spend in God’s word? How often do we consult God’s word when choices lie before us? When you have a question about something you have purchased, you look in the owner’s manual or the instructions. When you need guidance in life, do you search God’s word to light the path for your feet to travel?

Pray

Guiding God, you are always speaking to us through your word. We thank you for guiding and directing our paths through each stage of our lives. Help us to always hide your words in our hearts that we might not sin against you. Amen.

Go with God!
