Relax and clear your head. Listen for the voice of God. What is God saying to you today?
Psalm 16 (NRSV)
Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble,
in whom is all my delight.
Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names upon my lips.
The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
I have a goodly heritage.
I bless the LORD who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
I keep the LORD always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.
For you do not give me up to Sheol,
or let your faithful one see the Pit.
You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Why is it that when we are in the most trouble or struggling the most with life’s problems that we feel the closest to God? In the midst of a crisis, I am most likely to immediately send up a desperate prayer while in the aftermath, it is often quite a while before I raise up my prayer of thanksgiving for God being with me.
Perhaps the psalmist speaks best to this. “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” Realizing that we are truly alone in many of these situations, the psalmist is sure that God has not left us. The psalmist proclaims that he chooses God. He remembers that God has dealt mercifully with him in the past, has guided him on the right path, and protected him by walking before him instead of behind him.
I wish I could say that in times of trouble I always turn to God and praise God with joy that I may not feel at the moment. What I do believe I can say like the psalmist is that in the presence of God “…there is fullness of joy…” and that knowing that leads me to want to always be there. May we all be led into God’s presence every day.
Your presence, O God, is always the place we long to be even if it seems we can’t find you sometimes. When we call you, O God, with your strength lead and guide us back to you, so we can be sheltered in your arms and experience your rest. Amen.
Go with God!
