Psalm 8 (NRSV)

O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?

Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Reflect

The psalmist begins this chapter by praising God’s name and God’s creation on earth. We are God’s creation, but we are also the one part of creation that God loves more than any other. God has made us just a bit lower than God!

When we feel that we are not good enough in our daily lives, perhaps not feeling appreciated at home or at our jobs, we need to understand how highly God values us. We are loved and appreciated by the creator of life and love itself. We are given a purpose by this very same God, which is something that we should celebrate every single day. When we are weak, God is strong. Take comfort in God and God’s word.

Pray

Holy God, thank you for your word. There will always be times that we do not feel strong enough. There will always be times that we do not feel worthy. Erase these feelings from our minds and surround us with your love, God. Thank you. Amen.

Go with God.
