1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 (NRSV)

Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another; and indeed you do love all the brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, beloved, to do so more and more, to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we directed you, so that you may behave properly toward outsiders and be dependent on no one.

Reflect

You just can’t love too much. These early Christian were well versed in love and had a reputation of showing love, but they were encouraged to show even more love. Love sounds so simple, but love is hard work. Paul told them to extend their love not just to the Christians who were serving beside them, but to love the outsider as well.

I can almost hear them saying, “Oh, no! Them too?” because that is exactly what we say today. Sure, we love the people in our family and church—but God wants us to love those people, too? How are we supposed to love them when they don’t love us? When they started the trouble? or When they cause their own problems? etc. Many times we blame the victims, judge someone’s circumstances, and dehumanize others—all of which makes it easier for us to turn our backs on them and to ignore their needs.

Today, as you go about your daily routine, pay special attention to those who need your love, your kindness, your assistance, or your act of inclusion. Be intentional in showing the love of Christ.

Pray

Lord God, you teach us that love is an action, not just an emotion. Help us to show your love today in deed as well as in our hearts and minds. May our actions express your love in our world. Amen.

Go with God.
