Straight Talk from Hippo: St Augustine as Preacher

I have the blessing of teaching Christianity as part of a World Religions class to students at a local community college. I love doing this because it keeps me in contact with young people now that I am not in the pulpit full-time. It is also discouraging. More and more our younger generation is losing not only faith, but their culture has lost its religious vocabulary. This makes preaching even more difficult because we are close to speaking a foreign language. Every semester out of 15 to 20 students, it is common that only 3 of the students can name the four Gospels. The students are not familiar with the parable stories of Jesus. They are not familiar with theological terms. It is not only college-age students. We are surrounded by a culture that is Biblically and theologically illiterate. How do we connect with our culture when we are increasingly losing shared interest and vocabulary?

This article shares what made St. Augustine not only a deep theological thinker and writer but also a preeminent preacher. There is much we can learn from this great preacher.   Click the link below and let me know what you think.
